Andhra Vaibhavam Express is a 1,226 sq. ft., 44-seat restaurant in Bejai, Mangaluru, karnataka, conceived as a compact, tiffin-led extension of an established hospitality brand. Rivona Architects had previously designed full-service restaurants and buffet environments for the same client; this commission required a distinctly faster format centred on quick meals, immediate orientation and efficient table turnover. The challenge was to deliver that operational speed without allowing urgency to become the atmosphere of the room.

The brief therefore became an architectural question: how could a dense programme occupy a modest footprint without feeling compressed, and how could the interior evoke Andhra hospitality without resorting to literal theming? The response was to organise the restaurant as a sequence of inhabited bays. Repeated arches, framed openings, column profiles and bracket-like junctions establish a continuous datum from entrance to dining. Their measured cadence gives the room visual order and turns movement through the compact plan into a deliberate progression.

Within this larger framework, cane screens, planter dividers, banquettes and loose furniture create smaller dining pockets. These elements filter rather than block views, allowing intimacy and acoustic softness while preserving daylight, orientation and visual connection across the restaurant. The geometry of the vertical frames continues overhead into the ceiling bays, where curved cane panels, patterned inserts and suspended fabric baffles bring enclosure, lighting and circulation into a single compositional system.

Material choice reinforces this spatial logic. Terracotta contributes warmth and visual weight; muted teal gives depth to the seating line; dark timber-toned frames articulate thresholds; and natural cane introduces texture, permeability and filtered light. Patterned textile inserts form deliberate pauses within the repeated arches, while woven pendant lights and living greenery soften the architectural order at the scale of occupation. Regional character is expressed through craft, colour, rhythm and assembly rather than applied iconography.

The most defining element is the repeated arch-and-bay system. It performs several tasks at once: it establishes identity, structures circulation, integrates ceiling and wall treatments, frames views and allows the compact restaurant to feel layered rather than crowded. The project ultimately fulfils the client's requirement for a recognisable Express format by balancing speed with composure. Ordering, seating and turnover remain clear and efficient, yet the dining room retains the warmth, dignity and cultural resonance associated with Andhra hospitality.

The completed design translates the client's operational requirements into a coherent architectural identity. Clear circulation, efficient seating and a legible service sequence support the speed expected of an express restaurant, while filtered views, layered planting, tactile cane, warm terracotta and repeated crafted frames keep the room calm and hospitable. The result is not a reduced version of the brand's earlier full-service interiors, but a distinct Express typology that preserves their dignity and sense of welcome.
