Anvaya is located within an urban residential neighborhood in Maharashtra, India. The site is surrounded by contemporary housing typologies, reflective of a rapidly modernizing urban fabric where traditional architectural identities are gradually being replaced. Despite its urban setting, the project draws deeply from the regional cultural context, referencing the spatial and material sensibilities of traditional Maratha wada homes while responding to present-day residential needs.

The residence was designed for an NRI couple and their family, who sought a home that felt emotionally familiar yet functionally modern. The brief emphasized comfort, calm, and a sense of belonging over overt luxury. The clients aspired for a home that evoked childhood memories and cultural rootedness while offering the clarity and ease of contemporary living.

The design approach focused on translating these emotional aspirations into a restrained architectural language—balancing openness with privacy, tradition with modernity, and nostalgia with practicality.

The primary inspiration for Anvaya was the traditional Maratha wada. Rather than replicating historical forms, the project abstracts its core principles—proportion, inward focus, material honesty, and spatial calm—into a contemporary expression. The name Anvaya, meaning lineage and continuity, reflects this conceptual intent, positioning the house as a bridge between generations, values, and ways of living.

A central design focus was the living space, anchored by a softly arched architectural feature. This element subtly references traditional forms while remaining minimal and contemporary. It serves as both a visual anchor and a spatial transition, embodying the project’s balance between heritage and restraint.

The primary challenge was the complete reconfiguration of an existing layout that lacked spatial flow. Another key difficulty lay in incorporating traditional references without becoming literal or ornamental, ensuring the home remained relevant, understated, and timeless.

Material selection was integral to the project’s identity. Basalt stone and matte stone-finish tiles ground the spaces, while lime-rendered walls introduce softness and depth. Solid saagwan wood was extensively used for furniture and joinery, celebrating craftsmanship and tactility. Contemporary PU-finished shutters were introduced to balance the earthy palette with modern refinement. All furniture was custom-designed and crafted in-house to maintain consistency in scale and detail.

The house was entirely re-planned to enhance openness and connectivity. Living, dining, and lounge areas flow seamlessly to encourage interaction and shared rituals, while private spaces are carefully cocooned to offer comfort and retreat. This configuration allows the home to function intuitively, supporting both togetherness and solitude.

Anvaya fulfills the clients’ aspirations by offering a home that is emotionally rooted yet contemporary in function. Through thoughtful planning, restrained materiality, and an abstracted interpretation of tradition, the residence achieves a balance between memory and modern living—creating a calm, enduring, and deeply personal domestic environment.
