Aroha, meaning "ascension" or "upward movement" in Sanskrit, is a thoughtfully designed 3,500 sq.ft. duplex residence located in Addanki, Vijayawada. This home beautifully reflects the philosophy embedded in its name—rising above the ordinary to craft a space that embodies peace, clarity, and intentional design. Set on a compact 5-cent urban plot, Aroha redefines spatial dynamics by embracing a minimalist aesthetic while paying homage to Kerala’s timeless architectural language.

The core idea behind Aroha was to create a tranquil oasis within the dense urban fabric—a home that breathes, opens up, and connects its residents to nature. The central courtyard is the soul of the house, acting not only as a lightwell but as a spatial anchor around which the rest of the home unfolds. It welcomes natural light and fresh air deep into the home, fostering a serene and open environment that resonates throughout both levels of the duplex.

Aroha is a 3-bedroom duplex home, designed for a family that values openness, simplicity, and functional living. The open-plan layout eliminates unnecessary partitions, allowing spaces to flow seamlessly from one to another. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are visually connected and designed to maximize transparency and spatial continuity, creating an atmosphere of togetherness and ease.

Kerala-inspired design elements subtly enrich the contemporary structure. Sloped roofs, wooden accents, textured lime plaster walls, and traditional courtyards are reimagined in a modern context. The material palette is consciously restrained—natural stones, exposed concrete, timber, and soft white walls work in harmony to evoke a sense of quiet luxury and tactile comfort.

The upper level houses the private zones, including three well-appointed bedrooms, each designed to draw in natural light while maintaining privacy. The master bedroom overlooks the central courtyard, maintaining a constant visual and emotional connection to the heart of the house. Thoughtful fenestrations and open-to-sky elements lend the interiors a dynamic rhythm of light and shadow through the day.

The home’s spatial clarity is further enhanced by its minimalistic approach—every element is intentional, every line is clean, and every corner serves a purpose. Storage solutions are integrated into the architecture, keeping the spaces visually light and clutter-free.

Aroha is not just a house; it is an experience of ascension—towards light, openness, and calm. It balances tradition and modernity, form and function, aspiration and groundedness. In a world that often overwhelms, Aroha stands as a quiet reminder that simplicity, when paired with thoughtful design, can create truly elevated living.
