Located in Ponnani, Malappuram, Ashokavilasam is a 1,658 sq ft single-storey residence completed in 2021 that challenges the long-held belief that architect-designed homes with rich spatial experiences are reserved for the wealthy. Inspired by the timeless qualities of Kerala's traditional nalukettu, the house reinterprets the idea of a central courtyard in a compact and affordable contemporary home. Built within just eight to nine months on a modest budget, the design minimizes the use of concrete, relying instead on a more natural and resource-conscious construction approach.

At its heart lies a small open courtyard that welcomes rain, sunlight, and changing seasons into everyday life, creating a home where nature becomes an integral part of the living experience. Rather than replicating tradition, Ashokavilasam distills its essence into a simple, thoughtful, and accessible architecture, demonstrating that spatial quality, cultural continuity, and poetic living can exist within modest means.
