A Serene White Sanctuary Floating Above Surat’s Farmlands

Perched atop Ghoddod Road in Surat, this penthouse is a study in restrained elegance—a minimalist retreat designed for a client (Mr. Paresh Patel) seeking tranquility amidst Gujarat’s urban energy. With panoramic views of the lush Agricultural University farmlands, the home was conceived as a quiet counterpoint to the city below, where every design choice prioritizes calm, openness, and an unbroken dialogue with nature.

Originally a conventional 3BHK, the space underwent a radical transformation to align with the occupants’ lifestyle. The staircase to the terrace, once awkwardly positioned in the balcony and blocking the views, was relocated inward. This strategic shift not only liberated the sightlines but also allowed the layout to be reworked into a spacious 2BHK—a more intimate fit for the couple.

"The goal was to erase boundaries between inside and out," explains the designer Nihar Thakkar. "By stripping away visual clutter and reorienting circulation, they turned the home into a canvas for light, greenery, and quiet reflection."

The materiality of the penthouse is a masterclass in subtlety. White dominates floors, walls, and ceilings, applied in seamless, joint-free finishes to amplify the sense of volume and purity. "They wanted the space to feel innocent, almost cave-like in its serenity—where the eye rests and the outside greenery becomes the art," Warm oak furniture and earthen-textured accents soften the whiteness, introducing an organic contrast that grounds the ethereal aesthetic.

Despite its luxury underpinnings, the penthouse avoids ostentation. Instead, it cultivates sophistication through emptiness—zones designed to morph effortlessly from private meditation corners to vibrant gathering spaces. Structural challenges, like unavoidable columns and beams, were dissolved into the monochromatic scheme, their edges blurred to maintain the home’s fluid geometry. Black was deliberately omitted; even thresholds and fixtures fade into the background, ensuring nothing distracts from the ever-changing landscape beyond the windows.

Functionality is artfully concealed. Custom storage disappears behind flush panels, while flexible layouts accommodate everything from solitary relaxation to entertaining. The terrace, now accessed via a discreet internal staircase, doubles as an open-air extension of the living space—a place to dine under the stars or wake up to mist rolling over the farms.

"The true luxury here isn’t in excess, but in the freedom to breathe," reflects the client (Mr. Paresh Patel). Light fixtures are minimal, artworks sparse, and textures deliberately restrained—raw linen, smooth lime plaster, and the occasional hand-thrown ceramic. The result is a home that feels both expansive and intimate, where the rustle of leaves and the play of sunlight become the primary decor.
