What makes this project special is that we had a hundred percent synergy with the clients right from the start. The spaces evolved around the lifestyle and the basic requirements of the clients and were not based on any particular theme. We were conscious of the clients’ Goan and Mangalorean roots and have brought in elements which reflect these roots.

The house was originally two 2.5 bhk units, which we combined to create a single dwelling space. Before we started the planning, there were 2 ideas that the clients were very particular about: converting the room in the North East corner into a balcony and having the master bedroom in the western quadrant, which faces a beautiful rain tree. The home is designed for a small family of three, a young couple and their 2-year old daughter.

This was a complex Architectural Interior project wherein we broke down all the internal and a few of the external walls to suit our spatial requirements. There were a few oddly placed columns that dictated the internal layout. We wanted these columns to look deliberate, and hence, the arches created in the space. The brick arch at the entrance was designed to make one such column into a design element. This also helped us create a small internal foyer space, which separates the open dining from the entrance. The house is spatially divided into two quarters. The Eastern quarter houses all the public areas, such as the formal living room, formal dining room, and the balcony. The western quarter has the 3 bedrooms, which are accessed through the family room.

This segregation is also defined by the choice of flooring materials. The public quarter sports a leather finish Kota, which brings out the earthy tone of the home and marries well with the exposed brick walls and wooden tones. The private quarter uses a warmer wooden flooring with patterned tiles accenting the long corridor, which leads into the 3 bedrooms. The home has a perfect mix of exposed brick walls and soft eggshell white walls, which become the perfect backdrop for all the artwork in the home, which is done by the client’s father. The muse for the living room colour scheme was one such stunning art painted by her father.

The living room and the kitchen line the balcony in an L shape, and both spaces open into the garden area there. The kitchen sports a warm ochre tone and is designed as an open plan. There is an island with capacious drawers that becomes a perfect breakfast counter as well. The top unit has a fluted glass and teak wood shutters to balance the solid ochre shutters in the base unit. The wooden trims on the top units amplify the old-world charm that the home exudes. The antique Tiffany lamp goes hand in hand with all the modern appliances, which ensure this kitchen is suited for the needs of today.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining room with a beautiful 8-seater dining table resplendent in tones of teak. The antique crockery unit is the highlight of this space. A carved wood and glass peep window brings in the vistas from the balcony into the dining space. This peep window is framed by a photo wall, lined with rich wallpaper. As a family that loves to host people, it was pertinent to have a space that is big enough.

The master bedroom also has elements of exposed brick wall and concrete finish to continue the warm rustic tone of the house. The teak wood bed with intricate fabric and minimal brass detail brings a richness to the master bedroom. A small bay window opens into the beautiful Raintree outside, which dictated the spatial plan of the very room itself. The wardrobes in this room use cane framed in an off-white finish.

A few arches have been introduced in the daughter’s bedroom, which have been converted into storage ledges. The beautiful wallpaper inside the arches is custom-made by Metamorph and brings the perfect mix of whimsy into this room. The wardrobe here has a custom panel that is handcrafted using natural dyes and materials by Indeclectik.

All the elements in this home come together to create a feel of earthy luxury, exuding a warmth that makes the people who live here feel close to nature while being situated in a very busy area of the city!
