Devamshi Residence is a three-storey family home in Bengaluru that reinterprets traditional South Indian architecture through a modern and timeless sensibility. Built on a 35x60 ft east-facing plot with a total area of 6,000 sq.ft, the house embodies the warmth of regional craftsmanship while responding to the needs of contemporary living.

The design draws from the essence of vernacular architecture, the veranda’s, wooden columns, tiled roofs, and internal courtyards. Reimagined with a restrained material palette and clean geometry. The result is a residence that feels rooted in its context yet effortlessly relevant to modern urban life.

Planned as a vertically layered home, Devamshi unfolds through spaces that encourage openness, connection, and natural light. The ground level accommodates service and utility spaces, while the first level forms the social heart of the home with living, dining, kitchen, and guest areas flowing seamlessly together. The second level houses private family spaces like bedrooms, a study, and the home’s defining feature courtyard which is open to the sky. This space allows sunlight and rain to enter freely, creating a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere at the centre of the house. The top level includes a bedroom and a terrace garden, offering a quiet retreat within the dense urban setting.

The character of the home is defined by its earthy textures and natural finishes. Teakwood, stone, and polished marble form the core material palette, creating a calm and cohesive visual identity. The facade combines stone cladding with crafted wooden balconies and columns, while the interiors carry forward the same warmth through detailed joinery and furniture.

The staircase with patterned tile risers, wooden treads, and slender metal railings acts as a sculptural connector across levels. On the upper floor, the skylit ceiling is composed of carved wooden panels that filter sunlight softly through the day, giving the interiors a rhythmic and layered ambience.

Light plays a defining role in shaping the experience of Devamshi. From the skylit passages to the open courtyard, daylight moves gently through the house, highlighting the textures of wood and stone. Each crafted element from the carved columns to the detailed railings which adds warmth and continuity, expressing the spirit of traditional craftsmanship in a simple and enduring way.
