Set amidst the green landscape of Yercaud, GOVILLA is a renovation project that explores how an existing hospitality property can be renewed without losing its original character. The design approach was intentionally restrained, retaining the existing structure and landscape while introducing a carefully curated architectural and interior language that gives the property a fresh identity.

The primary brief was to transform the existing property into a more refined, comfortable and contemporary retreat while minimising unnecessary structural intervention. Rather than treating the renovation as a complete replacement, the design focused on understanding what could be retained, enhanced and reinterpreted. This approach allowed the existing building and its natural setting to remain central to the project.

Externally, a restrained grey-toned palette was introduced to give the building a more contemporary and cohesive expression. Brick cladding was used selectively as an accent rather than as an extensive surface treatment, adding texture and warmth to the otherwise minimal exterior. The intervention was deliberately subtle, allowing the existing built form to remain legible while giving it a renewed architectural presence. The existing landscape was retained, strengthening the relationship between the renovated building and its established natural surroundings.

The interior takes a warmer and more tactile direction in contrast to the understated exterior. Earthy neutrals, timber tones, muted greens, soft textiles and textured surfaces create a calm and intimate hospitality environment. The living space is anchored by an olive-green upholstered sofa, complemented by warm lighting, indoor planting and carefully selected furniture and accessories.

A distinctive feature is the custom grid-patterned wall, which acts as an architectural backdrop while providing a framework for a curated collection of Indian-inspired decorative plates. This introduces colour, craft and cultural references into the otherwise restrained interior palette. Layered curtains filter natural daylight, creating a softer atmosphere and allowing the quality of light to become part of the interior experience.

One of the key challenges was achieving a significant visual transformation within the limitations of an existing structure. The design therefore relied on proportion, materiality, detailing, furniture and lighting rather than extensive reconstruction. This reduced unnecessary intervention while allowing the interiors and exterior to acquire a distinctly renewed identity.

The project brings together two complementary expressions: a quiet, grey-toned exterior that sits comfortably within the landscape and a warm, richly layered interior that creates an inviting guest experience. GOVILLA demonstrates that renovation need not erase what already exists; through selective intervention and thoughtful detailing, an existing property can be given a new identity while preserving its architectural and environmental context.
