Set in the endless green backdrop, the ‘House of Earthy Hues’ is located in a calm suburban area of Aluva, outside the hustle and bustle of Kochi city. The brief was to design a simple tropical house with earthy elements, which blends in with the lush green paddy field on the rear side. The building was intended to be also a calm and peaceful place for the clients' ageing parents, who had lived all their lives in a rather smaller closed house, and designed as a playful and engaging space for the clients' small kids.

‘House of earthy Hues’ – adapts the colour palette from what is around the house, as the name refers, breaths in the outside inside. This 2500 sq.ft eco-friendly residence is designed in a tropical site responsive method exploring all the advantages of the adjoining paddy field. The house has been designed with 2 bedrooms, a spacious living, dining area including an internal courtyard and kitchen space in the ground floor and 2 other bedrooms including master bedroom with private courtyard, a family living space with an extended spacious deck area in the first floor. The kitchen has been planned facing the open paddy field, where ample airflow of light is guaranteed, considering kitchen as the most used space in the houses.

The major feature of the house being the slanted exposed brick wall is designed to stand out from the surrounding areas yet giving the tropical residence that merges with the background. The combination of exposed brick, concrete and metal has been used proportionately to bring out a unique facade in earthy tones. The massing of the house has been deliberately planned according to the interior room levels and the difference in facades in both front and back. The building uses natural brick and exposed concrete as the basic external finish with plastered walls in the internal spaces.

Along with that, a combination of earthy tones with wood has given the interiors a cozy and homely feel to the rooms. Custom making each furniture pieces was also a part of the design plan understanding its importance in following the theme and to blend all the areas into one.

The calmness and cool atmosphere in the interior spaces makes this house different even in this summer season. Free flow of fresh air from the paddy field throughout the day is made sure with the usage of materials like perforated sheets, jaalis etc. Cross ventilation through large openings, usage of natural materials and courtyard spaces has helped in decreasing the temperature inside the house. Overall successful transition of design into the warm and welcoming spaces and the satisfaction in clients face is worth more than any reward.
