Nestled in the quiet lanes of Juhu Scheme, Mumbai, House of Textures is a home— where every corner reflects the essence of who they are: travelers at heart, coffee lovers, and warm hosts who live life to its fullest. Having previously designed their home, the familiarity between the architects and clients, Rushabh and Jigisha, laid a foundation of trust and creative freedom. The brief this time was simple yet profound — a clean, minimal home that celebrates textures and embodies their personalities.

At Saga Designs, every project begins with the plan — the blueprint that defines clarity and intention. The house was planned for 4 adults and a child, with a guest room and generous recreational zones. The planning revolved around understanding how the family interacts and transitions through their spaces across different times of the day.

This understanding led to the creation of unique social anchors within the home — a coffee nook, a cafeteria-style informal living, and a den with a live bar. Each space not only catered to their lifestyle but also layered their passions within the architecture itself.

Designing this home meant balancing comfort with clever functionality. For instance, the partition wall between the son’s bedroom and the parents’ walk-in wardrobe was smartly merged to utilize every inch of space, transforming a six-inch wall into dual-purpose storage.

The kitchen posed another challenge — a long, narrow layout originally intended as a service alley. Reimagining it as the main kitchen led to an ingenious plan: the earlier kitchen area now serves as a dining space, while the cooking zone was pushed along the elongated passage, concluding in a cozy pantry corner. Every inch was optimized, making a tight kitchen feel expansive and efficient.

As the name suggests, House of Textures is a tactile journey — a play of surfaces that redefine simplicity. The clients’ love for clean white surfaces became the springboard for an exploration of textures, reinterpreting white through varying grains, finishes, and materials.

A neutral palette forms the base — soft beiges and greys enlivened by art, upholstery, and accent details. The boldest move, however, was the dark grey marble flooring — a dramatic yet grounding choice that elevates every other element. Initially met with hesitation, the clients embraced it wholeheartedly, and it became one of the defining features of the home.

Every space resonates with its user’s personality — the parents’ room balances calmness with the tactile warmth of cane and stone; the son’s bedroom adopts a clean, edgy aesthetic; the master suite combines a soft, modern-industrial sensibility. Across all, a quiet dialogue of contrast unfolds — rough and smooth, matte and glossy, natural and crafted.

The coffee station, overlooking the den, anchors the family’s daily rhythm. It showcases souvenirs from their travels, cherished mugs, and even a LEGO set from the show F.R.I.E.N.D.S, echoing their love for shared experiences.

The den—originally the floor’s entrance lobby—was the most challenging yet rewarding transformation. What began as a 120 sq.ft. area cluttered with services, ducts, and a staircase evolved into an intimate, moody bar lounge. Wrapped in a bold ink blue, the space hides functional necessities behind mirrored panels, which reflect light and create depth. The “battle” to retain the blue walls became a memorable design story—one that ended with unanimous love for the outcome.

The project’s evolution was deeply collaborative — both with the clients and other creative studios. Furniture pieces from Thumbimpressions (Surat) and ORI, discovered at RAW Collaborative (Vadodara), introduced unique artisanal character and industrial nuances to the space. Art and accessories were chosen to punctuate the calmness with personality.

Every phase of this project was dynamic — design discussions often happened over 7 a.m. breakfast meetings, the only window before Rushabh and Jigisha began their day. These morning sessions became rituals — creative, conversational, and deeply personal.
