Kavungal Estate is a tranquil farmhouse retreat located within a lush 12-acre farmland in Shornur, set along the serene banks of the Bharathapuzha River. The site is embraced by nature, with expansive greenery and a large natural pond of nearly 1.5 acre forming a key visual and environmental asset of the landscape.

The client’s vision was to create a farmhouse that is sustainable, earthy, airy, and deeply connected to the land. To achieve this, the design follows a philosophy of honesty in materials and construction. Every surface, finish, and detail embraces the raw beauty of the material itself—unpolished, natural, and expressive. The result is an environment that feels warm, grounded, and authentically connected to nature.

The farmhouse is planned as an open, linear layout divided into two wings. One wing accommodates the private spaces, including the bedrooms, while the other houses the living, dining, and kitchen areas. These two volumes are thoughtfully connected by a shared common space, which becomes the heart of the project.

This connecting space is the most distinctive feature of Kavungal Estate. Designed as a seamless indoor–outdoor transition zone, it opens to a courtyard on one side and a reflective water body on the other. The interplay of open air, natural light, greenery, and water creates an environment that is calming, experiential, and ever-changing throughout the day.

A notable highlight of the farmhouse is the attic space designed above, accessed from the main circulation spine. Conceived as a contemplative retreat, the attic offers elevated vantage views of the farmland, the expansive natural pond, and the flowing river landscape beyond. This space captures the essence of the estate—quiet, introspective, and deeply connected to water and land.

Filtered light, the undisturbed view of fields, and the changing colors of the day make the attic a space where the rural setting can be experienced in its purest form. Whether used for reading, resting, meditation, or simple observation, it becomes a poetic architectural moment – ‘Redefining the rural living’.
