Set within the verdant fabric of Jayanagar, Bangalore, MOIA reinterprets the contemporary dining space through a design approach that is both contextually sensitive and progressive in expression. Conceived as a renovation of an existing 1980s structure, the project carefully balances heritage and modernity, preserving the building’s inherent character while layering it with a contemporary architectural language.

Central to the design is the intent to dissolve boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The surrounding greenery of Jayanagar becomes an integral spatial element, shaping both experience and identity rather than serving as a mere backdrop. Carefully framed views establish a seamless dialogue between enclosed dining areas and landscaped surroundings, allowing openness while maintaining intimacy and privacy. The architecture adopts an earthen yet modern vocabulary, where materiality, form, and detailing come together to create a warm and immersive dining atmosphere.

The façade is reimagined through a metal perforated skin that wraps the existing structure. This performative envelope mediates light, ventilation, and privacy while redefining the building’s visual identity. Conceptually, the elevation draws from the metaphors of a birdcage and a greenhouse, a lightweight enclosure that is both protective and porous, blurring the line between containment and connection.

Materiality reinforces the project’s narrative of preservation and renewal. The original Sira stone cladding is retained and celebrated for its raw tactility, contrasted against the precision of contemporary metal fabrication. This dialogue between permanence and modern intervention grounds the project in both memory and relevance.

MOIA Jayanagar emerges as more than a restaurant. It is an architectural narrative of continuity and transformation, where nature is woven into the spatial language and an existing structure is thoughtfully reinterpreted. The result is an urban retreat where architecture, landscape, and gastronomy converge, reframing the past while embracing the everyday rituals of gathering and dining.
