Sitting on the edge of the Kaveri River in Hond village, Gujarat, a house that is part of a development scheme rests on land filled with mango and chikoo trees. The site houses two structures: the main house, which functions as the family area with a living room, dining area, kitchen, and two bedrooms, and an outhouse, placed near the edge of the site facing the river, which functions as a quiet getaway with just two bedrooms and a pantry area.

Designed as a house with extensions, it allows intimate interactions with the surrounding greenery, effortlessly bridging the indoor and outdoor spaces, particularly with the fruit trees. These trees serve as ‘pause points,’ providing visitors moments to linger, absorb, and connect with the landscape. They anchor the design in its natural surroundings while reflecting a rustic charm, reminiscent of bygone times.

As one enters, the main house is discovered by following a meandering walkway, offering opportunities for pauses and chance encounters. In contrast, the outhouse is hidden from view behind a large stone wall, with entry through a small gateway that leads into a larger volume shaped by varying roof angles. The passage then leads to the two bedrooms, with a front verandah overlooking the river.

The terracotta-tiled sloping roof adjusts its ridges and angles in response to the local weather, with heavy rainfall during the monsoons. This also creates different volumetric spaces that guide the circulation. Additionally, a tucked-in landscaped court acts as an extension of the outhouse, becoming the perfect space for small family celebrations.

The overall site landscape is strategically integrated with enclosed spaces, gardens, and pockets designed to accommodate various activities, such as a sand-filled children’s play area and sunken seating for bonfires at night, allowing for a seamless flow throughout the property.

With a nature-inspired material palette, the sparse furniture elements throughout the house are curated to accentuate the refined yet relaxed atmosphere of the farmhouse. Every space, path, and plant contribute to a seamless journey through layers of context, nature, and design, making it a place of relaxation and reflection for generations to come.
