The project is located in BTM Layout, Bengaluru, a well-known residential neighbourhood characterized by its grid-like street pattern and a harmonious mix of independent low-rise homes. The site lies adjacent to a natural lake, offering a rare ecological interface within a dense urban fabric. While the lake provides visual and climatic advantages, The neighbourhood primarily consists of 40x60 ft individual residential plots, creating a consistent scale and streetscape. The calm internal roads, mature avenue trees, and proximity to commercial and educational hubs contribute to a balanced regional context that influenced the overall design direction.

The client sought a contemporary residence that maximizes natural light, ventilation, and spatial openness while ensuring privacy from neighbouring homes. They envisioned a modern, functional, and climate-responsive design. Responding to this, we aligned the spatial layout with the site’s natural advantages—lake views, prevailing wind flow, and daylight patterns. The home includes four bedrooms, two living spaces, a dedicated study room, a multimedia room, and a terrace garden, all arranged to enhance comfort and connectivity. The ground floor further incorporates parking for four cars, an owner’s office, and a maid’s unit, ensuring the built form remains efficient, experiential, and sensitive to its surroundings.

The design is inspired by contemporary tropical architecture, combining bold geometric forms with warm wood textures and clean modern lines. The façade draws from dynamic massing and deep overhangs that respond to climate while giving the home a distinctive identity. Interiors are guided by the concept of light as a sculpting element, using linear LEDs, layered materials, and refined finishes like marble and wood veneer to create depth and luxury. A focus on openness, nature-inspired tones, and crafted detailing ensures each space feels modern, elegant, and comfortable while maintaining a cohesive visual language throughout the home.

The one element we were particularly keen on developing was the central courtyard/double-height living. This space became the heart of the project by connecting levels visually, allowing ample natural light, enhancing ventilation, and creating a dramatic spatial experience that anchors the entire design. The biggest challenge emerged from the site’s proximity to the lake, which required detailed geotechnical studies and a reinforced foundation system due to weaker soil conditions. Managing the high water table and ensuring long-term structural stability demanded careful planning. Additionally, fitting a sense of openness into a tightly packed locality required thoughtful placement of windows, setbacks, and private outdoor pockets. Balancing privacy, views, and local by-laws formed another layer of early challenges.

The project used a reinforced concrete structural frame, allowing flexibility in spatial planning. For the walls, solid blocks or bricks were used depending on the thermal requirements of each façade. The material palette included elements such as natural stone, textured plaster, timber accents, or exposed concrete. Construction emphasized durability, climate-responsiveness, and visual warmth. Shading devices, projections, and recessed windows were carefully integrated to improve performance. The spatial layout was planned around maximizing light, ventilation, and lake orientation. Public functions such as living and dining were positioned to capture the best views, while private spaces were arranged to ensure comfort and seclusion. Vertical circulation was placed strategically to separate active and passive zones. The planning aimed for a seamless flow between spaces, a hierarchy of openness, and a functional yet emotionally engaging environment.

The design does more than address functional requirements—it embodies the clients’ emotional vision for their home. They imagined a space that felt warm, inviting, and deeply personal, where their family could grow, bond, and create lasting memories. The contemporary façade, with its clean lines and wooden accents, captures their wish for a sophisticated yet comforting presence within the neighbourhood. They desired a home that felt safe, uplifting, and future-ready—one that inspires them daily. Through warm materials, thoughtful lighting, and seamless spatial flow, the design delivers an environment that is both luxurious and intimate, aligning with their lifestyle and identity. Ultimately, it balances practicality with emotional resonance, making the home truly and uniquely theirs.
