Nestled within the Beeri suburban neighborhood, a few kilometers away from the vibrant city of Mangalore, this architectural design takes full advantage of its location by incorporating multiple frontages. The orientation of the building creates a captivating and immersive experience. While embracing the beauty of simplicity, contextual design and a harmonious blend of minimalism and traditional aesthetics, it also successfully combines adhering to Vaastu compliances with a clutter-free living environment.

The planning demonstrates both functionality and aesthetics coming together to create a balance in communion with nature.

The design is highlighted with its rustic charm by adorning its exterior facade with the use of laterite cladding. As you approach the site, your attention is immediately drawn to the exquisite laterite jaali wall adorning the parking area. This intricately designed feature serves a dual purpose by not only enhancing the aesthetics but also ensuring privacy for the delightful private garden nestled behind it. Complementing the exterior material, karkala stone is used for adding a natural elegance to the landscape, in the form of cobbles and random design.

The roof of this structure is a playful interpretation of Mangalore tiles, which holds a special significance as they were originally sourced from the client’s previous residence, hence these are also visible from the entrance on the compound wall, as a design element.

The experience on entry is cocooned from the exterior viewpoint of the house. The entrance located at the northeast corner of the site, culminates at a freestanding tiled roof entrance sit-out flanked by steps. With its orientation towards the private garden, the verandah creates a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors. The verandah faces an imposing red laterite clad alternating with patterns of local karkala stone. The entire stretch of the verandah is covered by Mangalore tiles, evoking a sense of nostalgia and a feeling of belonging.

The main door of the structure showcases a staggering design, featuring a robust wooden frame that effortlessly blends with the local material palette. The double door is meticulously crafted with paneling and carving and brass inlay, which evokes its traditional aesthetics. A window adjacent to the main door harmoniously combines the interior feel of the house with the exterior with its kadachil design.

For the flooring, a majestic play of polished Kota and Jaisalmer stone has been incorporated by skillfully combining their unique designs. Jaisalmer stone, used as an inlay material, adds an exquisite touch to the design. As you approach towards the first floor, the flooring smoothly transcends into the staircase, alternatively creating a sense of continuity in space and visual connection.

To create a naturally beautiful experience, a skylight was added along the passageway to generate an engaging ambiance along different times of the day. The skylight with the flying birds stimulates the inner space with varying moods of light and shadows casted which is created by the continuous movement of the sun. An interesting play of brass and veneer was used in the interior door pattern which complements with the design of the rest of the house.

The front block of the house constituting the living and dining space are more public in nature and have large openings perforating through its opacity. On the other hand, the rear blocks are more private in character and introverted in expression.

The use of breakout spaces like verandahs, balconies and shaded terraces provide a unique sense of character and a breath of fresh air. These spaces underscore the dramatic symbiosis between the indoor and outdoor by creating a nostalgic feel of space and character with the use of its mangalore tile roof accompanied by its details.

The tray detail on the parapet wall of the balcony creates a seamless expression with its sleek appearance. The purpose of adding this detail was to create a visualization of the entire floor as a tray, upon which elements such as the cast iron railings would sit and make space for activities. This detail enhances the aesthetics providing a more elegant appearance. The Beeri Residence stands as a testament to the idea that a humble and simple design can create a warm and inviting home.
