The house is located in Pune, Maharashtra, a city that sits between the bustle of Mumbai and the calm of the Deccan plateau. The site lies within a residential neighbourhood that is slowly expanding yet still carries a sense of openness with wide streets, greenery, and a quieter pace compared to the density of Mumbai. This shift in context provided the foundation for imagining the home not just as a residence but as a retreat.

The clients, having lived in the heart of Mumbai for over five decades, approached them with a clear brief: they wanted their new home to feel like a farmhouse - open, tranquil, and deeply rooted in natural textures. Their approach was to design a house that balanced rural sensibilities with modern sophistication, allowing them to transition seamlessly from an urban lifestyle to one that embraced calmness and simplicity.

The key inspiration came from rural Maharashtra and its traditional built forms. Their team visited temples and village homes, observing how materials, details, and spatial planning shaped the lived experience. Elements such as the devli (sacred niche) and khuntis (stone hooks) became important cultural references that they reinterpreted for this project. Natural stones - basalt, yellow Jaisalmer, and white marble - formed the backbone of the design, each carrying both functional and metaphysical qualities. Lime wash was used for wall finishes, echoing the tactile character of rural houses while also providing sustainability and softness to the interiors.

Among all the spaces, the central zone with a water-focused feature in golden Jaisalmer became the most defining element. It acts as a mono-visual anchor of the home, symbolizing calm and continuity, while smaller insertions of fragmented white marble emphasize moments of quiet significance.

One of the main challenges was achieving the balance between rustic authenticity and contemporary refinement. The project demanded construction techniques that respected local methods while elevating them for durability and comfort. Stone was employed not only as flooring and cladding but also as a subtle means of spatial delineation, ensuring openness was preserved while transitions between spaces were articulated.

Spatially, the house is organized to maximize openness, light, and a sense of flow. Natural textures are carefully layered - stone, lime, and wood - so that the home breathes in harmony with its surroundings. The result is a sanctuary that feels both rooted in tradition and elevated by modern design clarity.

The yellow Jaisalmer stone, golden yet fluid in spirit, flows like water through the basin's form—solid stone shaped to evoke a ripple of calm.
