MuseLAB's journey began in 2012 out of a 50sqft conference room that was a borrowed space. Then about seven years ago, we moved to Prabhadevi's industrial neighbourhood, where we occupied a 296 sq.ft space that allowed us to have a storefront and a double-height space within. Having completed ten years and with the studio; constantly evolving we realized that we had outgrown the current space. Our six-month search of finding that perfect space that ticked all the boxes ended when we found our new home at Kamat Industrial Estate towards the end of 2021, a block away from where we were.

Mumbai is where we are from; while the city is not perfect, it has a lot to offer. Prabhadevi is one of the older neighbourhoods. The bylanes are intimate and reveal a lot of hidden spaces. Walking through the modest stairway leading up to our studio is akin to a cultural walk through the city.

Located on the second floor of an industrial estate neatly tucked away from the din of the main road, one is surprised to find a perfect wooden panelled door that reveals little beyond the warmth of its materiality and eye for detail.

To make the space ours, the existing partitions were; mostly gutted. The double-height 1200sq.ft space, with a 400sq.ft loft is blessed, with big windows framing the foliage and roofscapes that separate us from our neighbours. As the windows are all southeast facing for a good part of the day, our space bathes in natural light, making us rely only on some indirect lighting that is strategical; planned over task areas. Light captured within the space is absorbed by the lightly textured walls with their; matte and grainy finish. Contrasting the raw coolness of the wall and the stone-like dark flooring is the warmth of the live edge wood flowing work surface that stretches from column to column at the core of the space. Either edge of the workspace is mirrored, with birch-ply top desks supported by the warmth of teak wood legs that were a part of our earlier studio. The central workspace sits under a 400 sq.ft loft; that houses a flexible lounge that consists; of a library, material boards, and an informal meeting space that is perfect for movie nights at the studio. The loft connected by a ribbon-like fabricated spiral staircase peels away from the floor, rising above in a similar texture and hue as the flooring.

The main space holds all the essential functions together,  housing the central workspace flanked by a double-height entrance on one side. The double-height entry lures you in towards the client-meeting room. Tucked away in one corner of this space is the pantry, book-ended by our spiral staircase. On the deep end of this open floor plan facing the entrance door; is a custom-made table with a marble top where the founding partners sit together. In the southeast corner, two windows placed perpendicularly are our place of refuge. It is where we have an informal set-up for quick discussions, coffee and lunch breaks.

Tactile surfaces embedded; in our DNA form a crucial part of our work. It is always about materials, textures and forms. Our studio is where we like to withdraw from everything outwardly and draw inspiration from within. Craftsmanship and collaboration resonate through our practice which reflects within our space. Each furniture piece, object, rug or light piece evokes an emotion. We choose to surround ourselves with objects and art that are unique.

Our space is a result of what we as a practice have been cultivating and nurturing since its inception. The details and gestures within the space are meticulously planned moments of discovery. Materials are layered throughout the space, from warm woods in the custom-made cabinetry and work surfaces to stone countertops and tiles and a custom-made wallpaper in our restrooms. The studio is peppered with some of our own designed furniture pieces and objects. A handwoven custom-made wicker lamp from Wickerstory is suspended over our pantry space. An artwork titled Promise of Time by Garima Gupta is composed of 42 drawings that are backlit and correspond to spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Product designer Harshita Jhamtani with whom we often collaborate created a cactus lamp and side table; made in ceramic. This piece sits comfortably in our lounge space. The 'resting chair,' an installation; created by us, sits gracefully by a window reflecting the various moods within the space. Adding soul to a space is essential. Custom-designed objects speak to the architecture of a space. The DNA chandelier fabricated in metal using pipes to form a double helix consists of ceramic bells and contrasting metal baskets. This light installation is representative of who we are and our story. It represents the MuseLAB DNA. The way we do things. Which is difficult to describe but evident in our process and what we create. This chandelier has been; designed in collaboration with Jeet Soneji, one of our own - a MuseLAB alumnus.

Adding soul to a space that tells stories adds substance to a space. Our space is an extension of who we are, and it is an amalgamation of our thoughts and aspirations where we shape intentions and dreams. It is our laboratory where we create concepts with a sense of curiosity and playfulness. We firmly believe that unicorns exist!
