Mostly South: Home with Essence of Kerala in contemporary style

In Piravom, Kerala, Mostly South finds its essence in the simplicity of everyday life. Designed for a family of five, the 3,000-square-foot residence brings together contemporary elements and the aesthetic character of South India. Familiar materials, cultural rituals, and the quiet poetry of the everyday forms the strong pillar of this home. The design is an intersection of modern living with the inherited roots.

The home’s character is created by clean-lined furniture, influenced by Mid-Century Modern design, paired with the warmth of teak, the earthy texture of laterite, and the delicate presence of cane. Jute rugs soften the floors, while clay objects and South Indian-inspired artworks introduce muted touches of colour. Every element breathes with an ease.

Teak appears across the furniture and architectural details, giving the rooms a subtle richness. Laterite cladding adds depth to selected surfaces, balancing the smoothness of the contemporary interiors with a more perceptible, grounded finish. Together, these materials keep the home from feeling overly polished, allowing it to retain a sense of ease and familiarity.

The ground floor accommodates two bedrooms, the living and dining areas, the kitchen and a pooja courtyard. Three compact bedrooms, a television lounge and a bar counter occupy the first floor. An open-plan layout ensures a seamless flow between spaces, while generous openings invite daylight and promote natural ventilation throughout the home.

The living room is a combination of grey porcelain tiles, a textured jute rug, and block-printed curtains to create a layered canvas. The aesthetic palette of smooth surfaces, natural fibres, and patterned textiles adds depth and warmth.

At the intersection of dining, lounging, and cooking areas, there's a space that reflects the easy rhythm of family life.

Earthy laterite, richly grained teak, woven cane lamps, and expressive clay art lend the interiors a distinctly tangible quality. Rooted in the material traditions of Kerala, these elements bring an aura of contemporary simplicity.

The kitchen strikes a balance between warm wood finishes and the cooler tones of stone. A black granite countertop, white vertical dado tiles, and wooden cabinetry give the space its unique character, with the contrasting finishes adding details without overwhelming the palette. Full-height overhead cabinets make the most of the available storage, while the layout is tailored to the everyday routines and cooking traditions of a South Indian household.

The tone of the kitchen is set in sync with the local culinary practices and traditions.

The bedrooms are drawn using a calm material palette, understated woodwork with clean and sophisticated lines. Earthy neutrals establish a warmth of calmness, complemented by the patterned texture of block-printed curtains. Diagonally laid flooring visually expands the simple rooms, while artworks portraying traditional South Indian dance forms provide animated accents and a cultural counterpoint to the minimal interiors.

Rather than looking to tradition for its visual language alone, Mostly South draws from the materials, artistry and everyday experiences that give South Indian homes their character. These inspirations are woven into a contemporary setting through natural finishes, thoughtful detailing and refined cultural references. The interiors follow an earthy, muted palette, with spatial zones defined through subtle transitions in flooring, curtains, furniture, and artwork. Rooted in its regional context, the home finds its expression in the relationship between natural materials, cultural references, and spaces designed around the beats of contemporary life.

Mostly South does not seek to recreate a traditional Kerala house. Instead, it is a subtle reflection of its surroundings. This creates a home that feels distinctly contemporary, yet remains connected to Kerala through texture, ambiance, craft, and memory.
