Anantam: A sanctuary woven in warm ochres, deep siennas, and enduring craft

For architects, sites are like manuscripts which hold multiple stories of time and space. In creating a residence for a family, the architect adds, negates and writes-over several parts of the site's story – to retell it afresh and anew. Similarly, when a multi-generational family decided to build their residence, the designers at Kuryaat Spaces helped write the building's story, imbuing it with light, life and attention to detail. With architecture and interiors both accomplished by Kuryaat Spaces, residence is a seamlessly scripted story, with restful pauses, tranquil corners and neutral living spaces. The residence, named 'Anantam', is configured as a monolithic spatial mass, with inward-looking terraces and seamless verandahs to let light in. An open-to-sky inner courtyard is a light shaft, bringing in natural light across all levels.

To suit the requirements of senior living, as well as visits by the larger family, this Surat residence follows a unique, functional approach for contemporary urban living. The three-storeyed residence spread across approx 4500 sq.  ft . is approached through a lower and upper ground floor and a first floor.

As per the family's lifestyle, the lower ground-floor works as a basement, equipped with multi-purpose and storage spaces, while the upper-ground level holds the living, dining and kitchen areas, along with a master-bedroom. The first floor holds two bedrooms and a private recreational terrace, along with other services. A system of internal and external staircases allow for connectivity across floors, through living areas and service spaces.

The upper ground level is the heart of the home, setting the tone for the desertscape-inspired muted, neutral and earthy tones across the house. The living areas are expansive havens of calm, with plush grey-beige sofas and hints of teakwood browns. An ancestral wooden swing– a fixture in most Gujarati homes, is part of the seating symphony in the living area. As a special signature of Kuryaat Arts, a handmade batik fabric is stretched onto door shutters, taking an artful language forward. Across the home, handmade elements such as batik shutters, handcrafted wooden details and pichwai paintings add light and life to the serene environment. The dining area, with inhouse built dining table and the suspended light easily accommodates a bustling evening and moments of solitude. The kitchen design is suited to the family's requirement, with neat and hassle-free details and a breakfast perch with wooden high-chairs.

Master Bedroom of Anantam by Kuryaat Spaces and Arts

In the south-west quarter, the master bedroom is a haven of muted shades and touches of hand painted gold lines artwork by Rogan, reflecting the mature personalities of the senior inhabitants.

The cascade of steps emerge from the living area onto the upper floor, almost like a sculptural piece, gently rising upwards. Along this custom-designed staircase, artful elements like a clock composed of sun-salutation figurines by artist Shailesh Rajpurohit, and other framed art of the family greet one upward. The voluminous stairwell too acts as a breathing space, infusing light and a sense of expansiveness. The upper level is a private zone with 2 bedrooms, interspersed with recreational terraces and small nooks, opening out to accommodate larger gatherings.

The bedrooms reflect the personalities and preferences of the inhabitants; with hints of curated artworks, subtle textures and handpicked timber furniture. A sense of calm, restrained elegance pervades across the bedrooms, crafted in textured stucco, handwoven fabrics and handcrafted furniture.
