From riveted wood patterns to playful light fixtures, Deco House is a residential space that exemplifies subtle contrasts through its a beautiful amalgamation of Art Deco furniture pieces and contemporary design elements - all while retaining its heritage structure.

Designed for a couple, their primary request for this 2 BHK home was to envision a space away from the existing art deco style into a more contemporary looking house. Keeping this in mind, only a few nuances are retained of the old-style while the home is rehashed to suit the owners’ brief.

The main door retains the historic context of the art deco era with the nameplate adding to the charm. The entire house is dipped into a subtle nude wash, with the entry paneled with a wooden pattern wall that leads into the kitchen. The living room is flooded with a lot of light through the large windows, the dining and living upholstery is kept very straight forward with cushions and wooden swings adding the intricate details. The TV wall hides storage shutters within its paneling with symmetry being created through similar shutters on either side of the swing. The living and the rest of the house is divided using sliding doors with fabric sandwiched in-between with brass inlay on the edges, same brass detail continuous on the dining table base, handles or joint details and the light fixtures throughout the house.

The landing area before entering the bedrooms is marked with a golf textured console that houses functional elements. “The guestroom in contrast to the rest of the space is painted in two very delicate tones with a bold black used as an accent color for fittings and fixtures. We retained the ventilation windows connecting the landing and the guest to help bring day light into the centre of the house as it must have been in the original workings of the building structure,” says Kumpal Vaid, Principal Designer, Purple Backyard.

Guest bathroom and the master have a similar vibe with the vanities finished in lacquer, but the pattern and handle details are what make them unique and different. All colours are used in a manner that they stay pleasing and create a sense of calm for the couple who are in their mid-forties and as per their brief. “With the master bed we introduced a few motifs in the bedding and window treatments and kept the overall feel in harmony with the rest of the house. This house was built in a manner where we used the space as one and gave each room a small and significant refreshing element,” concludes Kumpal Vaid.
