The Singapore-based homeowners approached us to design a home rooted in tradition with an earthy vibe, featuring subtle colonial accents in the interiors. The plot was uniquely positioned, with houses lining three sides and a road running along the front, which limited privacy and outdoor space. To overcome these constraints, we decided to design a house cantered around a private courtyard. Incorporating a pool within the courtyard not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal but also provided a refreshing retreat within the privacy of the home. Additionally, we incorporated outdoor spaces such as a Goan balcao and verandas to bring the house closer to nature, fostering a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living. This layout allowed us to maximize the use of the available space while ensuring a sense of seclusion, comfort, and harmony with the natural surroundings.

The three-storey bungalow’s frame is constructed with RCC but we have minimized its use to enhance sustainability. The walls are made of locally manufactured, recyclable laterite stone, and the sea-facing side is clad in basalt stone. The pitched roof, supported by a wooden frame, is covered with terracotta Mangalore tiles. Seventy percent of the doors and windows are old, sourced from different parts of India. The columns supporting the dining verandah are 100 years old, sourced from Chennai. Interior finishes feature cement tiles from Bharat Flooring, while outdoor spaces are finished with basalt stone, creating a cohesive and earthy aesthetic. For the entry room of the house, we chose a warm, red earthy hue for the walls to create an inviting and grounded atmosphere. This rich, natural colour reflects the local landscape and adds a sense of warmth and vibrancy as soon as one steps inside. Paired with simple, rustic furnishings and subtle colonial accents, the red earthy tone enhances the overall earthy aesthetic of the home, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary comfort. It also sets the tone for the rest of the house, welcoming visitors with a bold yet warm statement that resonates with the house’s connection to nature.

The living room is designed in a traditional Goan style, featuring a high, sloping ceiling that enhances the sense of space. A divider screen crafted from oyster shells, inspired by the design of old Goan windows, adds a natural, coastal touch while providing privacy and visual interest. Colonial-style furniture, with carved wood and elegant detailing, complements the overall aesthetic, evoking a timeless charm. The living room doors open seamlessly into a covered terrace, creating a fluid connection to the outdoor environment and making the space feel more integrated with nature. A classic ceiling chandelier provides ambient lighting, tying together the traditional elements into a warm, inviting space that celebrates Goan heritage.

The client's mother's saree was framed and displayed near the stairway, adding a personal and cultural touch to the space. The open kitchen was designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, featuring clean, streamlined lines. Wooden shutters were used for the under- counter cabinets, enhancing the warm, natural aesthetic. A wooden kitchen island with elegantly designed legs serves as a central workspace, complemented by brass hardware that adds a touch of sophistication. Granite was used for the kitchen counters and dado, providing durability and a polished finish. To ensure ample natural light and ventilation, windows were strategically placed on three sides, creating a bright and welcoming culinary space.

The dining room serves as a vital connector between the living space and the private sections of the house. It is thoughtfully positioned to offer picturesque views of the courtyard pool and lush lawn, enhancing the dining experience. An outside verandah extends from the dining area, providing an ideal setting for outdoor meals and gatherings. The dining table is customized with antique legs, adding a touch of vintage elegance, while colonial-style chairs and carefully sourced vintage lighting fixtures elevate the aesthetic, creating a charming and timeless dining environment.
