Located in Ullal,a rapidly growing neighbourhood in West Bengaluru, this residence was envisioned as a calm oasis for a small family of three. The house is designed on a 30’x50’ plot, but due to road widening restrictions, it effectively became a 30’x40’ pot for us to design the building on. The front 10’ was designed as an open garden space.

Rather than shrinking spaces, the design was refined to maintain spatial quality and a sense of quiet comfort. Shambhavi responds to its context with restraint and clarity, allowing the home to feel warm, lived in and naturally composed.

The home is approached through the  ground level that accommodates parking, a small inviting lobby, lift and staircase core, and a quiet guest bedroom tucked away for privacy. The primary living spaces are accommodated on the first floor, allowing a sense of arrival and transition before entering the heart of the home.

The street facing elevation relies on proportion and crafted variation rather than complexity. A circular window and three slender vertical openings mark the living room, giving the home a recognizable identity that remains soft in expression. The balcony is framed by an arched opening with ribbed concrete fluting that introduces depth and shadow. The brick work incorporates herringbone and projected courses that create small shifts in texture and shadow through the day.

The living area sits alongside this volume and is anchored by an arched brick-clad backdrop that lends weight and warmth. Seating is arranged to allow quiet conversation, reading, or simply sitting with the courtyard in view. A small grilled balcony extends from the living space, finished in patterned flooring that continues the interior language. It is a space often used alone rather than in company, a quiet nook to begin the morning or let the evening slow.

The living area exposed to the road is a long wall and treated with a large circular window which is the highlight element of the façade and slit windows. The dining area remains modest and composed, accompanied by a solid wood console and a framed Pichwai artwork that introduces memory and familiarity. The kitchen continues the same soft clarity with warm-toned shutters, a beige quartz countertop and a simple dado. A geometric patterned floor subtly signals the shift into the kitchen without breaking spatial continuity. Movement across these spaces is gentle and unforced.

The skylit courtyard greets once upon arrival in the First Floor. The courtyard divides the living and dining space. The courtyard becomes an extended space of the living room. The powder room tucked in the corner divides the Living and dining thus giving the dining privacy. The entire powder room volume is cladded with beige random patterned sandstone which highlights the adjoining courtyard.

Natural light filters through slender frosted slit windows of the external courtyard wall and the skylight above and rests softly on the beige stone-clad wall. The light arrives slowly, shifts gradually, and settles evenly through the day, giving the living spaces a gentle rhythm. The courtyard this becomes the focal element as well as a space for pause. It is where the home breathes.

The bedrooms are accommodated in the second floor-The master bedroom and the kid’s bedroom. Both the rooms have a walkin wardrobe and well appointed toilet. The interiors of both the rooms are kept minimal with warm wood tones and carefully chosen accents.

The small study nook opening the courtyard is accommodated in the second floor. This also is a space which visually connects with the first floor. A nature themed  custom made artwork anchors this space.

The material palette is familiar and intentionally restrained. Brick, wood, stone ,white walls and neutral toned flooring create a cohesive atmosphere that is warm without being heavy.

Each material has been selected for its ability to age gracefully Textures appear where they feel most natural to the hand and eye: the stone-clad courtyard wall that catches daylight softly, the brick backdrop in the living room that grounds the space, and the carved baluster detail that subtly defines movement along the circulation edge.

The terrace completes the home as a place of slowing down. Held under a double-sided Mangalore tile roof, the space is grounded with rustic Spanish flooring and enclosed by arched jaali openings that allow breeze and softened daylight to move through. The atmosphere here is quiet and unhurried, with light shifting throughout the day and settling into a warm stillness by evening.

This space is designed as a multifunctional space. The blank wall serves as a projection surface for relaxed movie nights and the opposite wall is detailed with niches and a fixed concrete seater. This is also a space to host friends and relatives.. or just spend time with the family or in solitude.
